Cars have changed. So have traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads you travel every day. Some drivers aged 50-plus have never looked back since they got their first driver’s license, but even the most experienced drivers can benefit from refreshing their driving skills. By taking a driver refresher course you’ll learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. You’ll learn how you can manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time and much more. After completing the course, you will have a greater appreciation of driving challenges and a better understanding of how to avoid potential collisions and injuring yourself or others. The First Time class is designed to refine existing driving skills and develop safe, defensive driving techniques. A four-hour renewal course is required every three years after completing the original eight hour First Time course.
Minnesota state law requires insurance providers to offer a 3 year, 10% auto insurance discount to licensed drivers age 55 and older upon completion of an approved defensive driving course. The eight hour First Time class is required if you have not taken one previously through AARP. Bring your AARP membership card (if you are a member) to class. Included in the class fee are the AARP materials and a facility/host fee. Pre-registration is required.
